Family breaks silence after teacher dies in student prank gone wrong

Posted on March 10, 2026 By admin

Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old high school math teacher from Gainesville, Georgia, died on March 5 after a prank by students went tragically wrong.

During an annual junior/senior prank, teenagers wrapped toilet paper around trees outside his home. While confronting them in rainy conditions, Hughes slipped, and an 18-year-old driver struck him with a pickup truck. He was taken to the hospital but later died.

The driver was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and trespassing, while four other students face minor charges.

Hughes leaves behind his wife and two sons. His wife has urged authorities to show mercy, saying her husband cared deeply about his students and would not want their lives ruined by the tragedy.
