Richard Chamberlain, Beloved ‘Dr. Kildare,’ Dies at 90
Richard Chamberlain, famed for his roles in Dr. Kildare and The Thorn Birds, passed away on March 29 at age 90. Though adored worldwide as a TV heartthrob, his life was marked by personal struggles and a long-hidden truth.
Behind the fame, Chamberlain grappled with self-loathing and the pressure of hiding his sexuality in a less accepting era. He came out as gay in his 2003 memoir Shattered Love, reflecting on decades of inner conflict. “Being gay was the worst thing you could be,” he once said. Yet, despite the burden, he found peace through therapy and spiritual growth.
Chamberlain never regretted his decision to stay closeted during his peak. “Being a working actor was most important,” he said in a 2024 interview. He shared long-term relationships with actors Wesley Eure and Martin Rabbett, the latter remaining a close friend even after their romantic split. According to his obituary, Chamberlain and Rabbett had reunited and lived together in Hawaii before his passing.
Rabbett paid tribute, saying, “Richard is with the angels now… our love lifts him to his next great adventure.”
Chamberlain died in Waimānalo, Hawaii, following a stroke, just days before his 91st birthday. His last role was in 2018’s Nightmare Cinema. A few final public appearances and social media posts showed a happy, vibrant man, warmly remembered by fans and friends alike.
Despite personal struggles, Richard Chamberlain remained gracious, kind, and full of life until the end. His legacy lives on in his iconic performances and the love he shared with the world.
