Asthma can be fatal: Remembering Ryan Gibbons

Asthma attacks can be life-threatening, and 12-year-old Ryan Gibbons’ tragic death is a heartbreaking reminder.

Ryan loved the outdoors and motorbikes, but in 2012, he suffered a fatal asthma attack at school. His inhaler—confiscated and locked in the office due to school policy—was out of reach when he needed it most. Friends tried to help, but it was too late.

Despite repeated pleas from his mother and a doctor’s note, Ryan was not allowed to carry his inhaler. His school continued to take away spare ones he brought from home.

After his death, Ryan’s mother, Sandra Gibbons, fought to change this. She campaigned for a law to let kids carry inhalers at school. Her efforts led to the passing of Ryan’s Law (Bill 135) in Ontario, which requires schools to allow students access to their inhalers with a doctor’s note.

Today, while all U.S. states allow students to carry inhalers, enforcement is inconsistent, and some schools still restrict access due to anti-drug policies.

Over 10 Americans die from asthma daily—many of these deaths are preventable. Ryan’s story helped save lives, but more awareness is still needed.
