Rachel worked exhausting overnight hospital shifts and used to come to my place every morning to shower and sleep. Then, without warning, she stopped. At first I thought she was just exhausted, but she kept avoiding my questions and even refused to stop by my house to drop off important work papers.
When I finally confronted her, she admitted the truth. My mom’s basement tenant, Roger, had complained that her morning showers woke him up and told her that if she was going to keep coming over, she should start paying rent. Even worse, my mom sided with him, telling Rachel it would be better if she showered somewhere else.
Feeling unwelcome and humiliated, Rachel stopped coming over. Furious, I packed my belongings and moved out that same day to stay with her and her grandmother.
When I confronted my mom, she defended Roger so passionately that she accidentally revealed they were having an affair while my father was away working in Alaska. Suddenly everything made sense.
Rachel and I eventually found our own apartment, where I proposed six months later. We married the following spring with my father by our side, but my mother wasn’t invited. Leaving that house was painful, but it led us to a happier life built on love, trust, and respect.
