After nearly a year missing, Los Alamos National Laboratory employee Melissa Casias has been found dead in the Carson National Forest in New Mexico.
Authorities said a hiker discovered human remains in the McGaffey Ridge area, which were later identified as Casias. A firearm was found nearby, but officials have not yet confirmed the cause or manner of death.
Casias, 53, disappeared on June 26, 2025, after being seen walking near Ranchos de Taos. Investigators said she left behind her phone and identification, raising questions about what happened before her disappearance.
A private investigator hired by her family claimed her remains showed signs of a gunshot wound and described the discovery as suspicious, though authorities have not confirmed those details.
Casias was remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and family member. The investigation remains active as officials continue working to determine how she died.
