The Baby at the Funeral
At her husband Patrick’s funeral, Nancy is approached by an older woman named Amanda holding a baby.
“This is Patrick’s daughter,” Amanda says. “Her mother is gone. Only you can care for her now.”
Nancy refuses to believe Patrick could have betrayed her. But when she discovers the baby has the same birthmark as Patrick, she secretly orders a paternity test.
The result is devastating: 99% match.
Determined to find the baby’s mother, Nancy searches Patrick’s belongings and discovers an unfamiliar address in his GPS. She goes there with the baby and finds Amanda.
That’s when Amanda reveals the truth: the baby’s mother, Emma, had recently died after learning about Patrick’s death.
Emma’s name brings back a painful secret Nancy had buried for 20 years.
When Nancy was young, Patrick had loved Emma, not her. Heartbroken and jealous, Nancy lied that she was pregnant with Patrick’s child. Patrick believed her, left Emma, and stayed with Nancy.
The lie eventually ended, but Emma had already left town, and Patrick never found her again.
Now Nancy realizes Patrick must have found Emma years later—and their baby was proof.
“I used him. I lied to him,” Nancy confessed. “I want to make things right.”
But instead of abandoning the baby, Nancy chose to raise her as her own.
She named her Catherine.
Sixteen years later, Nancy finally told Catherine the truth. She expected her daughter to hate her.
Instead, Catherine hugged her and said:
“You raised me. You were there for everything. You’re my mom in every way that counts.”
Nancy broke down in tears, finally believing that perhaps Patrick and Emma had forgiven her.
What do you think of Nancy’s decision?
