Trump Proposes Bold Offer: Canada as 51st State
Donald Trump is once again making headlines with a provocative proposal: Canada could join the U.S. as the 51st state — or pay $61 billion to stay independent.
In a May 27 Truth Social post, Trump said he offered Canada a spot in his proposed “Golden Dome System,” a missile defense initiative modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome, featuring space-based sensors and interceptors. Trump claims it would cost Canada nothing if they become a U.S. state, but billions if they remain separate.
Canada had previously shown interest in the defense system, with former Defence Minister Bill Blair calling it a potential fit for national interests. However, the new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, echoed his predecessor’s stance: “Canada is never for sale.”
Despite Trump’s claim that Canada is “considering the offer,” there’s been no official response from Ottawa. Analysts largely view the proposal as political spectacle, though with serious undertones about national security and sovereignty.
Trump’s message is clear: statehood in exchange for defense and economic relief — a high-stakes deal that’s sure to keep making waves.
