Teachers play a vital role in our community but are often undervalued. They dedicate themselves to educating, mentoring, and supporting students beyond academics.
Jonathan Oliver, a phys-ed teacher at WG Nunn Elementary in Valdosta, Georgia, was recognized for a kind gesture during a basketball game. When kindergartener Kristen Paulk asked for help tying her hair back, Oliver knelt down and helped her, unaware he was being recorded.
The video, filmed by fellow teacher Kandice Anderson, went viral on YouTube with the caption, “When your job goes beyond teaching!” It later caught the attention of Good Morning America, where Oliver, a father of three, humbly said, “We all do it. We want students to feel at home and loved.”
Oliver joked that while he can manage a ponytail, more complex hairstyles are left to moms, like Kristen’s dad who often styles hair for their five daughters. Kristen’s mom, Miyah Cleckley, said the video reassured her that Kristen is in good hands and called the moment “really cute.”
