Most couples celebrate their 40th anniversary with a cruise or beach trip — but for South African pair Marius and Michelle Nortje, the wild is where their hearts are.
Their love story took an unforgettable turn during a trip to Kruger National Park, where a routine drive revealed three giraffes — one covered in strange growths.
“We go at least once a year, sometimes four,” Marius, a seasoned wildlife photographer, told The Citizen. This time, he captured something rare: a giraffe with large, wart-like lumps. He posted the images on Facebook, sparking concern and curiosity.
Wildlife experts later identified the condition as a papillomavirus, likely spread by oxpecker birds. Though alarming in appearance, the disease is not deadly and often resolves on its own — but can still cause discomfort.
Despite her condition, the giraffe appeared calm and continued grazing. The images stirred emotions online and served as a poignant reminder of nature’s beauty and fragility.
For Marius and Michelle, it was a powerful moment — proof that the wild still holds surprises after 40 years of love and adventure.
