British Grandmother Awaits Execution in Indonesian Prison
Lindsay Sandiford, 69, has spent nearly 15 years in Bali’s overcrowded Kerobokan Prison after being caught with 4.8 kg of cocaine in 2012. Once a legal worker in Cheltenham, she moved to India after personal and financial struggles, before flying to Bali where she was arrested.
Initially claiming she was coerced by a gang threatening her children, Sandiford later named others involved. While they served short sentences, she was sentenced to death by firing squad in 2013, despite prosecutors recommending a 15-year term.
Held in a prison built for 300 but housing over 1,400, she’s lost her appeals and now spends her time knitting to fund legal help. She formed a brief friendship with fellow inmate Heather Mack, who noted Sandiford had become withdrawn and resigned to her fate.
Her last wish? To die quietly, without her family present. “It’s not the death I’d choose,” she said, “but no one gets out alive.”
