Sometimes I get tired of my job—waking up dreading another day at the office. But even on bad days, I never have to worry about risking my life at work.
That’s something many of us take for granted. Some jobs aren’t just stressful—they’re dangerous. Take firefighting, for example. It’s easy to forget how much courage it takes to simply show up for that job every day.
When I was younger, I dreamt of being a firefighter—if the NBA didn’t work out—but now, I’m grateful others are willing to do it. Charging into a burning building? That’s not for me.
Thankfully, there are brave souls who do exactly that, whether it’s rescuing people from fires or battling wildfires—one of nature’s most destructive forces.
In countries prone to wildfires, the damage can be catastrophic. But while most people flee, firefighters go in to stop the flames and save lives.
A few years ago, a massive wildfire in Portugal required over 1,100 firefighters. Amid the chaos, a powerful image emerged: a group of exhausted firefighters asleep on a lawn after 24 hours of nonstop work. Pedro Brás shared the photo, writing: “After a night and a day fighting the Góis Forest Fire, we were entitled to 25 minutes of river beach, although it was covered by smoke.”
It’s a sobering reminder of the real heroes out there—quietly, courageously doing the work most of us couldn’t.
