John Stamos Opens Up in Memoir If You Would Have Told Me
In his candid memoir If You Would Have Told Me, John Stamos shares the highs and lows of his life and career, telling what he calls a “human story” rather than a hero’s. The actor describes the writing process as “therapeutic” and hopes readers can relate or take something meaningful away.
The book explores his struggles with alcohol, starting during his Broadway days in Cabaret and Nine, escalating to a DUI in 2015 that led him to rehab. He recounts going on an international press tour for ER while drunk and reflects on how alcoholism runs in his family.
Stamos also recalls painful personal moments, including childhood sexual abuse by a babysitter, an alleged sexual encounter with his Never Too Young to Die co-star Vanity, and the emotional toll of his divorce from Rebecca Romijn. He shares his heartbreak after learning of Bob Saget’s sudden death, a moment that left him in tears on the pavement.
Other revelations include having two nose jobs early in his career, feeling overshadowed by child actors on Full House, and how the show’s cast became his real family—hosting post-divorce sleepovers with them in Malibu.
The memoir also touches on a troubling incident with producer Jon Peters, who allegedly assaulted him on set, prompting his mother to call CBS.
Despite the dark chapters, Stamos offers reflections on growth, love, and the importance of being real.
