When Jeni Bonell first met her husband Ray, she was certain of one thing — she didn’t want kids. Ray wanted four. Fast forward 30+ years, they now have 16 children.
The Bonells, from Toowoomba, Queensland, are raising nine boys and seven girls, aged 10 to 35. With eight kids still at home, their weekly grocery bill hits $600 — including 50L of milk, 14 boxes of cereal, and 45 tubs of yogurt. Jeni shares tips on YouTube, showcasing her budget-friendly meals that cost as little as $2.
Life is a whirlwind of school runs, part-time jobs, and endless laundry — three full loads a day. Their chore roster starts at age eight, with even the 12-year-old capable of cooking dinner for 20.
Despite the chaos, Jeni and Ray maintain a sense of order with humor and teamwork. They prioritize family time, faith, and finding moments for themselves. Criticism comes with the territory, but Jeni says they don’t live off the taxpayer — they work hard and stretch every dollar.
Now grandparents too, the Bonells show that with love, structure, and resilience, even the busiest family life can thrive.
