The ‘nicest judge in the world’ has passed away, and the world is mourning.
Judge Frank Caprio, known for his compassionate rulings and viral courtroom videos, died at 88 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. But his rise to fame may never have happened without his wife, Joyce.
Born in Providence’s Federal Hill to Italian immigrant parents, Caprio helped his father deliver milk as a boy — even to families who couldn’t pay. This early exposure to kindness shaped his career.
Caprio worked hard, shining shoes and washing dishes while attending public school. He later taught high school while studying law at night. His warmth on the bench in Providence’s municipal court eventually gained global attention, with videos of his rulings earning over 1.7 billion views.
The footage had been filmed by his brother Joe for years, but it was Joyce who urged him to share it more widely — a move that led to the national success of Caught in Providence.
Joyce and Frank married in 1965, raised five children, and shared 60 years together. She remained his strongest supporter through his entire public and private life, including his final days. In a tribute, Frank called her “the incredible woman who gave me the greatest gift of all: our five amazing children.”
Caprio’s life was rooted in humility, kindness, and service. And through it all, Joyce was his constant — the quiet force behind the judge the world came to love.
