Tony Roberts, Actor Known for Woody Allen Collaborations, Dies at 85
Tony Roberts, best known for his roles in Woody Allen and Sidney Lumet films, has died at 85. His daughter, Nicole Barley—his only surviving family member—confirmed he passed away Friday at his Manhattan home from lung cancer complications.
Born in New York City on October 22, 1939, Roberts had a decades-long career in stage, film, and television. A Northwestern University graduate, he found early success on Broadway before starring in Allen’s classics like Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Play It Again, Sam, often playing the witty, supportive friend.
He also appeared in Lumet’s Serpico and Just Tell Me What You Want, and had TV roles in The Love Boat, Law & Order, and Frasier. On stage, Roberts earned Tony nominations for How Now, Dow Jones and Play It Again, Sam, and starred alongside Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria.
With a rich voice suited for narration and ads, Roberts maintained a low profile despite his prolific career.
Rest in peace.
