Ahmed al-Ahmed was hailed worldwide as a hero after bravely confronting a gunman during the Bondi Beach attack, likely saving many lives. The 43-year-old Syrian-born father-of-two tackled and disarmed one of the attackers, but was shot twice in the process.
Now hospitalized, Ahmed’s condition remains serious. His lawyer revealed he has no feeling in his arm due to severe nerve damage and recently underwent a complex operation, with another eight-hour surgery scheduled. He is in significant pain.
Despite his injuries, Ahmed addressed the public from his hospital bed, thanking supporters and asking his mother to pray for him. Australian leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns, praised his extraordinary courage.
His heroism inspired a fundraiser that has raised over $2.5 million. The attack killed 15 people and is the deadliest in Australia since Port Arthur. One suspect has been charged with multiple counts of murder and terrorism-related offenses.
