When my stepsister Ava showed up uninvited to my engagement dinner, I naively thought she was there to support me. But once again, she made the night about herself—just like she always has.
Ava entered my life when we were kids. I was excited to have a sister, but it quickly became clear she saw me as competition. Every achievement of mine was met with a crisis from her: fake injuries, emotional outbursts, even faking a broken leg to keep our parents from attending my high school graduation.
She hijacked my birthdays, my milestones, and even got married on the anniversary of my mother’s death. After college, I distanced myself. But recently, she seemed changed—pregnant, calm, maybe even remorseful. I let my guard down.
Then came the engagement dinner. Ava wasn’t invited, but showed up anyway, glowing and pregnant. I hoped for the best—until she stood up during my toast and announced the gender of her baby. Just like that, our celebration became her moment.
But then, something incredible happened. My stepmother stood up and, for the first time, called Ava out in front of everyone. She told her to sit down, accused her of stealing the spotlight, and even demanded she cover half the dinner bill since she “co-hosted.”
Ava, humiliated, finally backed down. I finished my speech without interruption, and for once, the moment was truly ours.
She did send the money. And maybe—just maybe—she finally learned that her actions have consequences.
