Ali MacGraw: From Stardom to Serenity
Ali MacGraw became a Hollywood star overnight with her breakout role in Love Story (1970), which earned her an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe. But just as quickly as she rose, she left the spotlight.
Born in 1939 in Pound Ridge, New York, MacGraw grew up in a troubled household. Her father, scarred by a difficult childhood, was abusive, especially toward her brother. Despite this, Ali pursued a creative career, attending Wellesley College and later working in fashion at Harper’s Bazaar before transitioning to modeling and then acting.
Her big break came with Goodbye, Columbus (1969), but Love Story made her an icon. She married Paramount executive Robert Evans, with whom she had son Josh Evans, but left him for actor Steve McQueen after co-starring in The Getaway (1972). Their volatile relationship ended in divorce in 1978.
Following a string of flops and personal struggles, including alcoholism, MacGraw sought help at the Betty Ford Clinic. She later stepped away from Hollywood, focusing on interior design, volunteer work, and yoga.
Now 85, MacGraw lives peacefully in Tesuque, New Mexico, where she values privacy and community service. Though largely out of the spotlight, she briefly returned to the stage in 2006, reuniting with Ryan O’Neal.
Her son Josh Evans followed in her footsteps, becoming a successful actor and director. Married with a son, Josh shares a close bond with his mother, whom he describes as deeply supportive and loving.
