The world was watching as Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met face-to-face in Alaska this weekend, hoping for a breakthrough in the Russia–Ukraine war. Instead — nothing.
Now, Trump turns his focus to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with both set to meet in Washington. Their last encounter, alongside VP JD Vance, ended in chaos and sharp words. This time, the stakes are even higher — peace, NATO, and Ukraine’s future hang in the balance.
Before the meeting, Trump made his position clear on Truth Social:
“Zelenskyy can end the war almost immediately if he wants. Remember how it started. No NATO for Ukraine. Some things never change!!!”
Zelenskyy quickly responded:
“I’m in Washington, meeting Trump tomorrow. We all want peace, but it must be lasting. Ukraine gave up Crimea and part of Donbas before — and Putin used it to attack again. Vague security promises failed us in 1994. We need real guarantees now, like NATO membership.”
After the Soviet collapse, Ukraine gave up its massive nuclear arsenal in exchange for security promises — promises that proved worthless after Russia’s invasion. Many Ukrainians now see disarmament as a mistake.
Zelenskyy also reported military progress in Donetsk and Sumy, thanking Trump, America, and allies for support:
“Russia must end the war it started. Our strength — together with the U.S. and Europe — can bring real peace.”
With Trump pushing “instant peace” and Zelenskyy demanding lasting security, today’s Washington meeting could shape the war’s next chapter.
